The Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) measures how your body processes sugar and is primarily used to identify diabetes, prediabetes, or gestational diabetes in pregnancy. It is an early detection method to identify a problem before symptoms arise, so you can take steps to optimize your health.
Process
- You’ll fast overnight and have a blood sample taken.
- You’ll drink a sweet liquid containing 75 grams of glucose
- More blood samples are taken at set times to measure sugar levels.
When to Get Tested
You may require this test if you experience symptoms of high blood sugar, have risk factors for diabetes (such as family history or obesity), or if you are pregnant (most likely between 24 – 28 weeks pregnant) to test for gestational diabetes.

A small blood sample is taken from a vein - usually your arm.
Test Preparation
Prior to testing, eat a balanced diet with enough carbohydrates for 3 days and fast for 8–14 hours before the test begins.
Understanding Your Results
In your results, there will be indications of whether your body metabolizes glucose appropriately. If your glucose levels are high at fasting, 1 hour, or 2 hours after drinking glucose, your doctor may suggest lifestyle changes or further testing to confirm diabetes.
