The GeneXpert MTB/RIF Ultra test is a rapid, accurate test to diagnose tuberculosis (TB) and assess for resistance to rifampicin, the most important TB medicine. This allows clinicians to quickly certifiably diagnose TB, and select the appropriate treatment, especially for the emerging threats of drug-resistant TB. This can be used to assess whether the disease is pulmonary or extrapulmonary and is appropriate for all older children and adults, including HIV positive individuals.
Process
- A clinical sample (most often sputum) is obtained.
- The sample is placed into the GeneXpert machine, and the machine's advanced technology determines if TB bacteria are present in the sample and if the bacteria are resistant to rifampicin.
When to Get Tested
If a patient displays signs of active TB or there is a suspicion of drug-resistant TB, testing should be recommended. This test is also valuable for early diagnosis in children and other patients with a compromised/government immune system.
Sample type
A sputum sample is the most frequently used sample, however other bodily fluids or tissues can be assessed.
Test Preparation
No special preparation is required. All you have to do is deliver a high-quality sputum (or other sample) as required by your healthcare worker.
Understanding Your Results
If TB bacilli are identified in the test, it will show whether they are resistant to rifampicin, and this awareness will provide the options related to treatment. If the result is negative, TB is unlikely, however if symptoms persist, more tests may be warranted.
