The Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) is a non-fasting blood test used to assess gestational diabetes and is often conducted during pregnancies, when women are typically at higher risk of developing diabetes, and more importantly a temporary type of diabetes, just while carrying the baby.
Process
- You will drink a liquid containing 50 grams of glucose.
- You will have blood drawn from your arm one hour after drinking the glucose liquid.
- The lab technician will then check your blood sample for blood sugar levels and how your body handled the glucose.
When to Get Tested
This test is typically performed for pregnancies between 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. If a pregnant woman has higher risk factors such as obesity, age 35 or older, or family history of diabetes, the time may actually be earlier.
Sample Type
Blood will be drawn from a vein at one hour after you have had the glucose solution.
Test Preparation
You do not need to fast. You should verify with your doctor or midwife if you should take or stop taking any medications. If in doubt, you should contact your doctor and ask.
Understanding Your Results
Blood sugar ranges are as follows: ≤140 mg/dL is within normal limits; 141-190 mg/dL should have a 3 hour test followed up; and ≥190 mg/dL is usually diagnostic of gestational diabetes, which requires treatment and close monitoring.
