Fungus Examination, Routine, KOH and Calcofluor White Preparation test helps to determine fungal infections in the skin, nails, hair, or another area of the body. The use of KOH and Calcofluor White stain helps to identify an infection, such as ringworm (tinea corporis), nail fungus (tinea unguium), or yeast infections (Candidiasis) in the skin, nails, and/or hair early on so that treatment can begin quickly.
Process
- A sample is taken (usually skin, nail, or hair) and placed on a microscope slide with KOH and Calcofluor White stain.
- The slide is then gently heated to clear debris and enhance visibility of fungal elements.
- The specimen is examined under a type of fluorescent microscope, to view clearly transilluminated fungal elements that appear bright white or bright green.
When to Get Tested
You may need the KOH and Calcofluor White test if you have any of the following symptoms: scaly rash, discolored nails, itching, and/or persistent skin infection that has not improved with regular treatment.
Sample Type
The sample can be skin scrapings, nail clippings, hair, or any amount of fluid from the infected area.
Test Preparation
There is no need to fast or make any special preparation. Although, clean dry skin is best for the accuracy of the result.
Understanding Your Results
Fungi will fluoresce under the ultra-violet light, if fungus structures are seen this indicates a fungal infection. If fungi are not seen this may still warrant a culture or repeat test if symptoms continue.
