The Fibrinogen Degradation Products (FDP) Blood Test assesses by-products produced when blood clots break down. The FDP test helps assess abnormal clotting function or excessive clot breakdown within the body. The FDP test is important for evaluating medical conditions, like deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), thrombotic disorders, and some disorders that may result in clotting.
Process
- A qualified healthcare profession will collect a small blood sample by performing venipuncture.
- The collecting blood will appear in special tubes that prevent clotting, while processing the sample.
- The sample will be sent to a lab and the FDP can then be detected using the special antibody.
When to Get Tested
One needs a FDP test if you are experiencing unexplained bleeding, or are symptomatic for a blood clot, or have had a medical condition affecting the clotting cascade, including stroke, infection and others.
Sample Type
A very small amount of venous blood (1-2 mL) will be needed in order to complete the FDP test.
Test Preparation
You don't need to fast prior to the test. Please notify your doctor if you are taking blood thinning medications, as they may impact results.
Understanding Your Results
Normal FDP levels usually indicate that no clots are breaking down. Elevated levels could indicate increased clotting potential, clot breakdown, and/or additional tests or treatment may be required based upon your doctor's discretion.
