The Fever Panel 1 test is a collection of blood and urine tests that are performed to find out the cause of a fever of unknown origins or ongoing fever. The panel is used to identify common types of infections such as malaria, typhoid, dengue, and urinary tract infections.
Process
- A small blood sample will be taken from a vein in the arm.
- A clean catch urine sample will be collected in a sterile container.
- All samples will be processed in the laboratory for infections and inflammation.
When to Get Tested
You should be assessed for the fever panel if you have a fever of more than 2–3 days duration with no discernable source or an unexplained fever that is also accompanied by chills, body aches, headache, rash, and/or vomiting.
Sample Type
The fever panel will require both a blood and urine sample.
Test Preparation
Generally, you should fast for 8-10 hours. You may continue to drink water, and you should avoid alcohol and large meals before the test.
Understanding Your Results
High levels of neutrophils can indicate a bacterial infection when lymphocyte levels are low, whereas high levels of lymphocytes may suggest a viral infection. Certain test results (e.g. positive Widal or dengue antigen) can help a doctor identify the source of the illness. In a follow up, a doctor may conduct more testing or provide treatment.
