The Serum Ferritin test determines the amount of ferritin (a protein that stores iron) in your body. This test measures your body’s iron reserves and is useful in the diagnosis of iron deficiency, iron overload, or any other condition that may be related to iron metabolism. Iron is necessary for the production of red blood cells that transport oxygen. If your ferritin level is abnormal, it may indicate anemia, chronic disease, or liver disease.
Process
- A small amount of blood will be drawn from a vein in your arm.
- The blood sample will be sent to our laboratory where it will be examined using immunoassay methods.
When to Get Tested
Testing is suggested if you have one of the following symptoms like fatigue, pale skin or colour, weakness, or shortness of breath. The test is useful to evaluate for unexplained anemia, and also for monitoring iron overload treatment or deficiency.
Sample Type
The sample needed is a 3–5 ml blood sample collected from a vein, usually from your arm.
Test Preparation
You do not need to fast or do anything special to prepare for this test, but do let your doctor know if you are taking any medications or supplements.
Understanding Your Results
Low ferritin means you have iron deficiency, and a high ferritin may indicate high iron levels, inflammation, or liver disease. It is always best to discuss your results with your doctor because they must be wires in relation to your symptoms and test results to get the correct diagnosis.
