The Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) Test is a simple blood test to help detect inflammation in the body. The test measures the time it takes for red blood cells to fall to the bottom of a test tube in one hour. If the red blood cells fall at a faster rate of speed, it could indicate inflammation may be taking place due to infection, autoimmune diseases or even some types of cancer.
Process
- A small amount of blood is taken, drawn from a vein in your arm.
- The blood is placed in a tall and thin test tube with an anticoagulant.
- After one hour the rate at which the red blood cells fell will be measured.
When to Get Tested
You may have this test done if you have some of the following challenges, fever, fatigue, joint pain, or sudden weight loss, etc. ESR test is commonly ordered to monitor for disease progression when individuals have one of the following concerns due to auto immune conditions, chronic infections, etc. or inflammatory diseases.
