This test measures how much sodium, potassium, and chloride your kidneys excrete in your urine over a full 24-hour period. It provides valuable information about the functioning of the kidneys and ability to excrete/deal with electrolyte levels. Physicians may also use the test to rule out kidney problems, assess effects of medications, or account for an abnormal electrolyte imbalance related to sodium or potassium levels.
Process
- You will collect all of your urine in a special container provided by our lab technician for a 24 hour period.
- Store the container cool or refrigerated while you are collecting the sample.
- After 24 hours, return the container with the entire sample to the laboratory for testing.
When to Get Tested
You may need this test if the results of your blood tests for electrolytes are abnormal. The test is also helpful when investigating unexplained symptoms such as muscle cramping, fatigue or uneven heartbeats. Physicians also use the test to monitor for kidney related medical conditions or if their patient's drug therapy involves sub-pharmological interventions.
