DENGUE FEVER ANTIBODY, IGG, SERUM*

The Dengue IgG Antibody Test is a blood test that detects IgG antibodies for past dengue virus infection. IgM antibodies appear much earlier than IgG antibodies. IgG antibodies typically appear around day seven, can last for months to years, and are an important test for three reasons. The first is that the IgG antibody test provides confirmation of whether you have ever had dengue. Secondly, IgG levels are useful in providing the timing of infection (if used with IgM testing). Thirdly, IgG testing can also be used to screen for secondary dengue infection that may be more severe. 

Process

• A small blood sample (3–5 ml) is collected from a vein in your arm.
• The sample is sent to a laboratory to undergo testing using ELISA to detect dengue-specific IgG antibodies.

When to get tested

You are suggested to undergo testing if you live or have traveled to a location, in areas of dengue prevalence. This is more significant if you experienced symptoms of concern or undeniable dengue symptoms (fever, headache, join pain and rash) > 1 week prior to testing. Testing IgG is also helpful for epidemiological purposes or to assess your immunity status prior to vaccination.

Sample Type

A single blood sample (serum or plasma) is needed for the dengue IgG antibody test.

Test Preparation

No fasting or special preparation is needed; you can eat and drink normally. Inform your doctor about recent infections or vaccinations.

Understanding Your Results

A positive IgG with a negative IgM means you had dengue in the past but are not currently infected. If both IgG and IgM are positive, it suggests a recent or secondary dengue infection, and your doctor may recommend close monitoring and further evaluation. A negative result for both antibodies indicates no evidence of past or current dengue infection; if you still have symptoms, your doctor might suggest repeating the test after a few days.
