The Dengue Virus Antibody IgG and IgM Test is a blood test that checks for two types of dengue antibodies: IgM, which shows a recent or current infection, and IgG, which indicates past exposure or immunity. Detecting both helps doctors know if you have a new dengue infection, a repeat infection (which can be more severe), or simply prior exposure.
Process
- A small blood sample (3–5 ml) is drawn from a vein in your arm.
- The sample is processed in a laboratory using ELISA or rapid immunochromatographic assays to detect IgM and IgG antibodies.
When to Get Tested
Get tested if you experience symptoms such as high fever, headache, muscle or joint pain, rash, or bleeding tendencies, especially more than three days after symptom onset. It’s also recommended during dengue outbreaks or when other tests (NS1 or PCR) are negative but dengue is still suspected.
Sample Type
A single blood sample (serum or plasma) is required for antibody detection.
Test Preparation
No fasting or special preparation is needed; you can eat and drink normally. Inform your doctor of any recent infections, vaccinations, or autoimmune conditions.
Understanding Your Results
An IgM-positive/IgG-negative result indicates a recent primary dengue infection needing medical follow-up. Both IgM and IgG positive suggest a secondary infection requiring close monitoring. IgM-negative/IgG-positive means past infection with immunity, but continues precautions. If both are negative, there’s no evidence of dengue, repeat testing may be needed if symptoms persist.
