Process
- Our lab technician will perform a blood draw from a vein in the arm, or in some cases, a hand
- The sample will be processed and plasma separated
- The laboratory will analyze the D-dimer levels via specialized equipment
When to Get Tested
You will likely be asked to complete this test if you present with leg pain or swelling, chest pain, or shortness of breath, all signs that suggest you may have a blood clot. Understanding Your Results
A lower D-dimer value will generally exclude significant clotting problems. Elevated levels may indicate clot formation, but are non-specific; therefore, additional testing (ultrasound/CT scan) should be performed to get a true diagnosis.
