The FNAC (Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology) test is a relatively straightforward and fast procedure that is also minimally invasive. The procedure is normally performed to investigate a lump or swelling present in the body. It tests whether a lump is non-cancerous, infected, or suspicious for cancerous change. FNAC is a valuable test in identifying the nature of a problem, and most importantly the window it provides, early on, about something that may require surgery.
Process
- A thin needle is inserted into the lump to get fluid or cells.
- The sample is then prepared on a slide or placed in a container and sent to the laboratory for analysis.
- The laboratory pathologist examines the sample under the microscope looking for abnormal cells.
When to Get Tested
FNAC is usually indicated when there is a lump or swelling of the breast, lump in the neck, lump under the arm (axilla), lump in the thyroid, or lump anywhere in the soft tissue in the body. FNAC can help look for infection, inflammation, cyst or cancerous change.
Sample Type
A small amount of fluid or cell is taken using a fine needle from the lump and/or area that is abnormal.
Test Preparation
Generally, you do not have to do anything special to prepare for the test. Let your doctor know if you take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder.
Understanding Your Results
The results may show if the lump is benign, cancerous, infected, or inconclusive. You may need to repeat the FNAC or do a biopsy, if the result is inconclusive. Your doctor will discuss next steps with you depending on the findings.
