The Culture Throat Swab Aerobic Sensitivity Test is an uncomplicated diagnostic test used to determine the presence of a bacterial infection in your throat (such as strep throat or tonsillitis). It also determines the specific bacteria causing your infection, and the best choice of antibiotic or medications to treat it. This helps your doctor choose the appropriate treatment, avoid unnecessary antibiotics, and facilitate quicker recovery.
Process
- The technician takes a swab and rubs the back of your throat and the tonsils with a sterile swab.
- The swab is sent to the laboratory where the bacteria are allowed to grow (cultured).
- The cultured bacteria will undergo antibiotic testing to see which works.
When to Get Tested
The test may be appropriate if you are experiencing a sore throat with a fever, patches of white on the tonsils, or swollen neck glands. The test is also considered suitable after the rapid strep negative test or in the cases of continual sore throats.
Sample Type
A throat swab sample is taken with a sterile cotton swab.
Test Preparation
Do not use antiseptic mouth rinses or throat sprays for 24 hours prior to testing. Do not eat and drink at least 1 hour prior to the test.
Understanding Your Results
If bacteria are present, then the report will indicate which antibiotics will be effective in treating your infection. A negative report may indicate a viral infection. Based on your symptoms, your doctor may recommend further evaluation, or supportive care.
