The Culture, Aerobic, Sputum Test is a laboratory procedure designed to identify bacterial infections in the lungs and airways. Specifically, the lab will identify specific aerobic bacteria (bacteria that require oxygen to grow) in sputum (mucus that has been coughed up from the lungs) and test which antibiotic will work best to fight the infection; therefore, this test provides the specific treatment for this infection, which may occur in situations such as pneumonia, bronchitis, or tuberculosis, and may help with recovery and reduce the likelihood of complications related to an infection.
Process
- You will need to cough deeply until sputum (lung mucus) has collected into a sterile container.
- The sample will be taken to our laboratory where the bacteria will be grown (cultured).
- Once identified, the bacteria will be "challenged" with antibiotics to determine which antibiotics will work best to treat the bacterial infections the patient has.
When to Get Tested
This test should be evaluated for you if you have symptoms such as persistent cough, chest pain.

No fasting is needed. Rinse your mouth with water before collecting the sample to reduce contamination.
Understanding Your Results
