CULTURE PUS AEROBIC SENSITIVITY

The Culture, Aerobic, Pus Test is a straightforward lab exam that can identify which bacteria are causing infection in a wound, abscess, or area of pus. By doing the test, we find out which bacteria are present and which of the antibiotics it is sensitive to, i.e., which antibiotics will treat it. The test is important as it helps physicians to select the right medicine, helps the infected area to heal more quickly and it helps to avoid complications.

Process

• A Phlebotomist will take a sample of pus from the site of the infection using a sterile swab or needle. This step is crucial to make sure no bacteria is introduced during sampling.
• The pus sample is sent to the laboratory where it will be cultured onto a media that encourages bacterial growth, and it is maintained with oxygen. 
• After between 24 and 48 hours, we will identify what bacteria have grown, and conduct antibiotic susceptibility testing.

When to Get Tested

You should think about getting this test done if a wound site has signs of infection - redness, swelling, pain, pus drainage, and you are not getting better with treatment. You should also think about this test in the case of infections that don't go away and infections that come and go.

Test Preparation

No special preparation is necessary. Disinfect the infected area beforehand and let your doctor know if you have recently used antibiotics. 

Understanding Your Results

A positive result indicates that bacteria are present, what antibiotic works best, and how much of it is needed. If a negative outcome is reported and the symptoms persist, further testing may be required to establish whether the condition should be treated differently.
