The Culture and Sensitivity - Aerobic Nasal Swab Test provides information on the types of bacteria that might be producing an infection in your nostrils or sinuses, and lists which antibiotics would be the most appropriate to treat the infection. This test is critical to diagnosing nasal infection, guiding treatment appropriately, and limiting the spread of resistant bacteria (like MRSA).
Process
- A sterile swab is gently inserted into the nostril, to obtain ingested nasal secretions.
- The sample is sent to the lab, in which bacteria will be cultured in the presence of oxygen until they are able to mature and multiply.
- The bacteria that appear after incubation will be identified, while antibiotic suitability will also be assessed for antibiotic sensitivity.
When to Get Tested
This test should be performed if you are experiencing symptoms such as nasal congestion, nasal discharge, facial pain, consistent nasal infection, or if screening for resistant organisms may be required prior to surgery or screening in the health care setting.

Test Preparation
Usually, no special preparation is needed. Unless your Doctor has specifically told you otherwise, you should avoid nasal sprays or antibiotics prior to the test.
Understanding Your Results
A positive result indicates the bacteria that caused your infection and which antibiotics are likely to work most effectively. A negative result means there were no significant aerobic bacteria found. Further work up is necessary to consider other causes. Any further steps will be guided by your doctor based upon the results that the lab provides.
