The MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) Culture Screening Test determines whether you're a carrier of MRSA or infected with MRSA, a bacterium that is likely resistant to some or all antibiotics. The presence of MRSA in a person is important because MRSA can infect easily, sometimes cause large infections, and can also increase your chance of being treated with antibiotics.
Process
- A sample will be obtained using a sterile swab, almost always from the nose or a wound.
- The specimen will be placed in a special plate to grow MRSA.
- The result is available within 24–48 hours, if a screening molecular (PCR) test is requested the results can be available much faster.
When to Get Tested
People that get admitted to hospitals, those with a history of MRSA, those who have had surgery or have recently had close contact with someone infected with MRSA should also be tested. Screening for MRSA is also very common when there is an outbreak of certain infections (like COVID-19) in healthcare settings.
Sample Type
Most commonly a nasal swab will be collected, other sample types may be a wound or body fluid.
Test Preparation
There is no special preparation required. Tell your doctor if you have used antibiotics or nasal sprays in the previous month.
Understanding Your Results
A positive result indicates you carry or are infected with MRSA, and may need treatment or to be in isolation. A negative result indicates you do not have MRSA, but in some cases why you have a negative result may need you to be tested again to confirm.
