This test allows for the identification of the bacteria that is causing an infection and demonstrates which antibiotics will kill it. This is done by taking a sample (blood, urine, or pus will determine what type of sample the lab takes) and isolating any bacteria that are present from the sample, then exposing the same bacteria to several antibiotics to see which antibiotic the actual bacteria is most sensitive to.
Process
- A sample is obtained by a phlebotomist from the site of infection (using a sterile technique).
- The sample is grown in a laboratory, designed to allow for bacteria to grow in an oxygen-rich environment.
- Once the bacteria are identified they are tested against various antibiotics to determine the most sensitive antibiotics that effectively treat the bacterial infection.
When to be Tested
This test is suggested if you have a fever, pus, discharge or inflammation associated with a bacterial infection. This test can also be important in the case of ineffective antibiotics or recurrent infections.
Sample Type
The types of samples may be urine, blood, sputum, pus, or a swab depending on the infection site.
Test Preparation
No fasting required. If possible, avoid antibiotics prior to the test, and follow collection directions.
Understanding Your Results
If bacteria are identified, the report will identify the type of bacteria, along with useful antibiotics. Your doctor will use this guide to treat you. A negative result would suggest that the cause of your illness is either viral or not a bacterial infection.
