The Urine Creatinine Random Test provides a level of creatinine, a waste product from normal muscle activity, based on a single sample of urine from the patient. It is used by physicians to determine kidney function and the specific gravity of your urine. This test is often used to determine early kidney damage, or in conjunction with other routine urine tests such as the albumin-to-creatinine ratio.
Process
- A clean sample of urine is obtained in a sterile container, usually while the patient is in the clinic.
- The sample is taken away to our lab where the creatinine is measured.
- When the creatinine results come back, our doctors will go over them along with the rest of the patient's health information.
When to Get Tested
You may require this test if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other symptoms to show any potential issues with your kidneys. It can also be used in situations when a 24-hour urine sample cannot be performed.

Test Preparation
There are no special preparations; fasting is not required. Refrain from heavy physical activity before your tests; it may elevate your creatinine level temporarily.
Understanding Your Results
Creatinine levels are interpreted in conjunction with other tests if urine albumin and/or blood creatinine is assessed. Elevated blood creatinine and urine albumin levels can indicate kidney problems as well as dehydration and/or other conditions, depending on the result. Additional testing may be used to further evaluate a definitive diagnosis.
