The Creatinine Fluid test measures the creatinine (waste product from muscles) levels in fluids found in the body (chest, ventricular, peritoneal fluids). This test can be vital to physicians in diagnosing urine leak, kidney problems, or accumulation due to injury or disease. While creatinine body fluid tests will not replace urine or blood testing, it will evaluate certain problems that the other two types of testing may not be able to.
Process
- Small amounts of body fluid using a sterile needle or sterile tube will be collected.
- The specimen is labeled then tested in our laboratory.
- Creatinine will be quantified via a validated chemical method (Jaffe).
When to Get Tested
If fluid has built-up (unexplained) in the chest, abdomen, or around the brain (chiefly after surgery or an injury); in patients on peritoneal dialysis, creatinine fluid testing will permit monitoring of peritoneal fluids.
Sample Type
Any fluid determined to have accumulated (pleural, peritoneal, cerebrospinal, drain fluid), must be tested.
Test Preparation
Generally, no fasting or special medication changes will be needed. Just follow your doctor’s instructions on how to collect the sample.
Understanding Your Results
High creatinine concentrations in body fluids could indicate a urine leak, kidney failure, or muscular breakdown. Your doctor will interpret these results in conjunction with the blood creatinine and may decide to get an image, further tests, or treatment.
