The Creatinine, 24-Hour Urine Test is done to check how well your kidneys are working. Creatinine is a waste that is produced by your muscles and is filtered out through the urine. When collecting all of your urine for 24 hours, it allows the doctor to measure how much creatinine is removed by your kidneys. This allows the doctor to see how well your kidneys function, and check if you have early signs of kidney disease or if your existing kidneys problems are getting worse.
Process
- You would discard the first urine of the day (for example, at 8 AM) and then you collect your urine for the next 24 hours.
- The urine is to be separated in the special container given by the lab, and kept cool or refrigerated.
- The next morning, you return the full container to our phlebotomist, including the first urine from that morning.
When to Get Tested
Some people who have diabetes, high blood pressure, or who have symptoms of kidney problems may need this test. Some people will also get this test if they have pre-existing kidney disease, or to confirm suspect blood test results that could implicate kidney conditions.

In order to complete the test a complete 24-hour urine sample is necessary.

Eat less meat before and on the test day. Tell your doctor all medications you are taking.
Understanding Your Results
High or low creatinine can indicate kidney damage, muscle breakdown or stopping the test correctly. The doctor will tell you what the results mean and may suggest other testing or treatment depending upon your condition.
