The CPK-MB test is a simple blood test used to check for heart muscle damage. It measures the level of CK-MB, an enzyme mainly found in the heart. High levels in the blood may suggest a heart attack or other heart injury. Doctors also use it to track ongoing heart damage or guide emergency care. This test is helpful when troponin results are not available or need confirmation.
Process:
- A small amount of blood is drawn from one of the veins in the arm.
- The sample is taken by a phlebotomist to our laboratory, where a unit is used to measure CK-MB levels.
- Sometimes repeat testing is done for several hours, to check for any changes after the initial routine activity.
When to Get Tested
If you are experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, or other symptoms related to a heart attack, you should receive this test. The CPK-MB test may have ongoing value for several variables of care, including tracking and monitoring an ongoing heart injury, as well as assuming reinfarction.

Test Preparation
Fasting is not necessary. If you are going to take a test, do not engage in heavy exercise in the hour before your test; also, tell your doctor about any medications or any conditions of your muscle.
Understanding Your Results
Myocardial properties typically allow physicians clear analysis of heart injury. However, normal results indicate the absence of recent heart injury. Elevated results indicate degree of damage, which may be due to a myocardial infarction (heart attack) or other disorders. The results must be determined with the other symptoms and tests (the troponins) to assess your doctor's next step in treatment or further testing.
