The Indirect Coombs Test is a blood test to determine if there are any antibodies in your blood that are capable of attacking red blood cells. IAT is an important test for safe blood transfusion and is useful during pregnancy to avoid complications, such as hemolytic disease of newborns. This test is used to determine if it is safe to give you blood from a donor or if your blood is safe for your baby.
Process
- A small amount of blood is taken from your vein by our lab technician.
- The serum is mixed with blood in a laboratory.
- A reagent is added; if agglutination occurs, the antibodies are present.
When to Get Tested
You may have this test before blood transfusion, during pregnancy (if you are Rh negative or if it is a special circumstance), or if your doctor has a suspicion about a state of hemolytic anemia.
Sample Type
A blood sample is taken from a vein of the arm.
Test Preparation
Fast or special preparations are not required. You should inform your doctor of any recent transfusions, medications, or if you are pregnant.
Understanding Your Results
A negative result means that harmful antibodies were not found and good news as you should not be at risk of future transfusion or pregnancy-related issues. A positive result means antibodies are present which may require additional tests for the identification of the antibodies and guidance on treatment or monitoring of the situation.
