The Coagulation Profile is a blood test that measures how well your blood clots and how long it takes to stop bleeding. It is useful in diagnosing bleeding or clotting disorders, monitoring blood-thinning medications, and checking your risk of bleeding prior to surgery. It helps doctors figure out whether your blood is clotting correctly or you may risk excessive bleeding or have the risk for clot development.
Process
- Our phlebotomist will draw a small sample of blood from a vein, generally in your arm.
- Your blood will be put into special tubes to prevent clotting.
- The blood sample will be sent to a laboratory, and the laboratory will have machines that will analyze your sample to determine clotting times and platelet counts.
When to Get Tested
You should be tested if you are experiencing unknown bruising/bleeding, currently take blood thinners, have a family history of clotting disorders, or are having a surgical procedure and wish to check your bleeding risk.

Assuming blood will be taken from either a vein in your arm; a small blood sample will be obtained.
Test Preparation
Usually, no special preparation or fasting is necessary. Always tell your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially blood-thinning medications. If possible, avoid heavy exercise prior to taking the test.
Understanding Your Results
Your test results show how long it takes blood to clot and whether your platelet levels are normal. Abnormal test results may indicate you will need further tests or changes in treatment due to bleeding or clotting problems.
