The Clotting Time (CT) test is a way to evaluate how long it takes for blood to clot after a blood sample is taken. It is a way to evaluate the ability of blood to clot properly to prevent excess bleeding and/or excessive clotting. It can identify issues related to clotting factors that help with stopping any bleeding, and it is helpful prior to surgery when considering bleeding or when there is unexplained bruise/bleeding.
Process
- A fresh blood sample is collected in a clean glass tube.
- The tube is held at body temperature (37°C).
- Every 30 seconds, the blood is gently swirled to determine how long it takes for a stable clot to develop.
When to Get Tested
You should consider getting this test completed when there is unexplained bleeding or bruising, prior to surgery, or your physician believes you may have a bleeding disorder or clotting factor situation.

Test Preparation
There is no special fasting that you need to do. Let your doctor know if you are taking any medications that affect blood clotting and do not do anything strenuous before the test.
Understanding Your Results
If your blood has normal clotting time, that means that your blood is able to clot when needed. However, if clotting time takes longer, this may indicate a deficiency in one or more of the clotting factors, or other issues, and your doctor may suggest additional testing to find the cause.
