Know More about CHOLESTEROL, TOTAL
The Cholesterol Total Test measures how much cholesterol is in your blood, including both "good" (HDL) and "bad" (LDL) cholesterol, and other types of fats called triglycerides. The Cholesterol Total Test is important to your doctor in determining your risk of heart disease and stroke, as too much cholesterol can increase your risk of fatty deposits forming in your arteries and cause heart diseases.
Process
- A phlebotomist uses a needle to draw blood from a vein, usually the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand.
- Clear your blood sample so that it can be sent to a lab to measure the result.
- After the test, you will typically receive your total cholesterol value, as well as total LDL, HDL, and triglyceride levels.
When to get the test
Adults should have their cholesterol checked every 4–6 years. More frequent testing may be appropriate if there are risk factors including family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or being overweight.
Sample type
Blood is drawn from a vein, which is typically the inside of the elbow or the back of the hand.
Test Preparation
You may need to fast for a period of 9 to 12 hours before the test, consuming only water. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about any medications or supplements you take, as these could alter your test results.
Understanding Your Results
Total cholesterol will be reported in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). A total cholesterol level below 200 mg/dL is considered to be desirable. A total cholesterol level between 200 and 239 mg/dL is borderline high, while a total cholesterol level of 240 mg/dL or higher is considered high. Your healthcare provider will use this information in conjunction with other values such as HDL level, LDL level, and triglyceride levels to assess your overall heart health and determine if lifestyle or medications are needed.
