The HDL Cholesterol, Direct Test measures high-density lipoprotein (HDL), commonly known as "good" cholesterol, in the blood. HDL cholesterol diverts bad cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it is eliminated from the body. It is important to know your HDL levels because the higher your HDL, the better your levels of good cholesterol, which lowers your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Process
- A blood sample will be taken from your arm by a phlebotomist
- Specific reagents will be added to the sample to separate HDL from other cholesterol.
- The HDL cholesterol level will be measured by a color producing enzyme reaction.
When to get the test
This test may be included in a routine test for cholesterol or you may be tested if you are at risk for disease (diabetes, obesity, hypertension, or family history of heart disease), and it is also used to monitor treatment.

A blood sample will need to come from a vein, often taken from the vein in your arm.
Test Preparation
Fasting for 9–12 hours is usually recommended. Avoid alcohol and inform your doctor about any medications.
Understanding Your Results
HDL levels below 40 mg/dL (men) or 50 mg/dL (women) may raise heart disease risk. Values of 60 mg/dL or higher are considered heart-protective. Results are evaluated with other lipid tests and health factors.
