The Chloride, 24-Hour Urine Test measures the total chloride your body excretes in one day using urine. Chloride is an important electrolyte that regulates fluid, blood pressure, and acid-base balance in the body. This test helps healthcare providers assess how well your kidneys are functioning, and whether you are losing or conserving excessive salt. This test can also help in evaluating for dehydration, adrenal dysfunction, and imbalances caused by diuretics.
Process
- Discard the first morning specimen on the day of the test.
- Collect all urine over the 24-hour period, including the first morning specimen on the day after the test.
- Keep the urine specimen container cool and it will be taken to our laboratory as indicated.
When to get the Test
Your doctor may ask you to complete this test if you have signs of electrolyte imbalance, have persistent vomiting or diarrhea, are taking diuretics, or have abnormal blood chloride levels.

You will need to collect all your urine over a 24-hour period, in a special container provided by the laboratory.
Test Preparation
There's no need to fast. You should continue your regular diet and fluid intake, but please notify your doctor about any medications you're taking.
