The Chikungunya Virus IgM Antibody Test is a blood test that detects evidence of recently or presently occurring chikungunya infection. The test looks for IgM antibodies produced by the body shortly after infection, which is important in confirming the diagnosis in people with symptoms such as fever, joint pain, and a rash, and allows timely treatment and care.
Process
- A small sample of your blood is drawn from a vein, generally in the arm.
- The blood sample is sent to the laboratory to be tested using ELISA or other means.
- When interpreting the test results, the laboratory will compare the levels of antibodies to standard reference values.
When to Get Tested
One should consider undergoing the test if they have recently experienced symptoms including sudden fever, joint pain, rash, and fatigue—most importantly in the context of recent travel to or residence in geographic areas that had chikungunya viruses circulating. Testing would also be considered during a local outbreak of chikungunya and during the evaluation of patients suspected to also have dengue fever when it is necessary to rule it out.
