The Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) Test is a very straightforward blood test that is used to measure the CEA level in a person's body. CEA is a protein that is typically found only in low levels in healthy adults, but can be elevated in some types of cancer. The CEA test is important because it gives doctors a way to monitor the effectiveness of cancer treatment, and provides some insight into cancer recurrence, especially for colorectal, lung, breast, and pancreatic cancers. The CEA test is not a screening test, but it can be useful for ongoing cancer care and follow-up.
Process
- A small amount of blood is drawn from a vein in your arm.
- The blood sample is taken to our laboratory for testing.
- The report will return with your CEA level which will be returned in ng/mL (nanograms per milliliter).
When to Get Tested
People who have been diagnosed with some cancers may undergo this test prior to, during, or after the treatment to identify if levels are increasing or decreasing. The test may also be ordered at subsequent visits to check if a doctor suspects any type of cancer recurrence.
Sample Type
A venous blood sample is required and will usually be drawn from the arm.
Test Preparation
Fasting is not required. Keep in mind that smoking will artificially increase CEA levels; we recommend avoiding it before the test.
Understanding Your Results
Normal CEA levels are generally below 2.5 ng/mL in non-smokers, and up to 5.0 ng/mL in smokers. High CEA levels may signify the presence or return of cancer. Remember, high CEA levels are also associated with a number of non-malignant conditions and may be subsequently tested again.
