The Urine Calcium/Creatinine Ratio Test measures the amount of calcium in the urine in relation to creatinine to assess how the body handles calcium and the ability of kidneys to handle it. This information is especially important in detecting disorders of excess calcium loss - that can lead to kidney stones or bone problems - and the test is simple and allows for assessment of calcium-associated disorders without an entire 24 hour urine collection.
Process
- Provide a random (spot) urine sample in a clean specimen container.
- The lab conducts calcium and creatinine measures in the urine.
- The ratio of calcium to creatinine is calculated and compared to reference values.
When to Get Tested
The urine calcium/creatinine ratio may be appropriate for you if you have unexplained hematuria (blood in urine), kidney stones or calcium-associated symptoms related to calcium metabolism disorders. This test is also helpful to monitor known calcium or kidney disorders.

Understanding the Results
A high calcium/creatinine ratio suggests excess calcium loss, which could indicate potential problems with the kidneys or bones. A low calcium/creatinine ratio with a high calcium blood test may suggest a benign genetic condition (familial).
