This blood test checks the level of C-reactive protein (CRP), a protein produced by the liver and present in your blood. CRP levels increase due to inflammation in the body. The CRP test is used to look for infection, to measure chronic inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis or lupus, and to determine the risk of heart disease with a more sensitive CRP test called hs-CRP. The CRP test is a simple way to find out about inflammation in the body, and it may help guide your doctor in treating the problem.
Process
- A phlebotomist will draw blood from your vein, usually from your arm.
- The blood sample is sent to a lab to measure the CRP level using immunoassays.
- CRP levels will be reported in milligrams (mg) per liter (L).
When to Get Tested
You should have a CRP test done if you have signs of infection or inflammation (swelling, fever, joint pain, etc.), you are managing an autoimmune disease, or if you need to assess the risk of heart disease (hs-CRP), particularly if you have other risk factors for heart disease.

Understanding Your Results
