The blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of urea nitrogen in your blood. Urea nitrogen is a waste product that is produced when your body metabolizes protein. Typically, your kidneys filter the waste and remove it through urine. If your kidneys are not functioning correctly, your BUN will increase. This test is valuable because it can tell doctors how well your kidneys and liver are functioning, track chronic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, and see how well dialysis is working.
Process
- A phlebotomist will take a blood sample from you, generally from a vein in the arm.
- Your sample will be taken to the lab for testing.
When to get tested
The test is necessary if you have symptoms of kidney problems, like swelling, fatigue, or changes in urination.
