A venous blood gas (VBG) analysis is a blood test that measures your body's acid-base balance and metabolic status. It measures values (pH, carbon dioxide, pCO₂ and bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻)) from a sample of venous blood. Having a VBG tests is a little less painful than having an arterial blood gas (ABG) and is often used when you need relatively immediate less invasive results. Venous blood gas testing is utilized often in emergency/critical care situations.
Process
- A blood sample is obtained using a heparinized syringe.
- The VBG sample is analyzed via blood gas analyzer within minutes.
- Tourniquet time is minimized to avoid alteration of results.
When to Get Tested
A VBG may be required if you are critically ill, you have clinical suspicion of acid base imbalance or if an arterial sample is difficult or painful to obtain. VBG is often used in cases of DKA, shock or septic state.

Test Preparation
You do not need to stop eating prior to the test - you should let the doctor know if you are on any oxygen therapy or respiratory support.
Understanding Your Results
The results from a VBG will tell you how acidic or alkaline the body is and will give a guideline for emergency treatment. Venous pH and bicarbonate are close to arterial pH and bicarbonate values, but pCO₂ and oxygen values may vary and should also be interpreted with limitations in mind! If there is suspicion of respiratory failure than the doctor may still want to obtain an ABG!
