Know More about BLEEDING TIME
The Bleeding Time (BT) test is used to see how long it takes your blood to stop flowing after a small cut of the skin. This can help to determine whether your platelets and small blood vessels are functioning correctly to stop bleeding. This test is mainly used for bleeding disorders but may be helpful before surgery or if you bruise easily or have unexplained bleeding. This test has been around for and is much older and therefore not performed much these days, it may still give us some idea about how your blood is able to clot.
Process
- The upper arm is inflated to limit the flow of blood.
- Two small incisions are made on the forearm using a sterile device.
- Blotting paper is placed over the incisions every 30 seconds for a set time to check how long it takes for the bleeding to stop.
When to Get Tested
You might get this test done if you bruise or bleed easily or or before surgery if there is a concern about bleeding. It is also used to test for platelet function problems.

No blood sample is required; the test is done on your skin.
Test Preparation
You should inform your doctor of all medications you are taking, especially aspirin and NSAIDs. You may be instructed to hold them prior to the test.
Understanding Your Results
Bleeding times can vary, but normal is usually considered to be between 1 to 9 minutes. If bleeding time is prolonged this may suggest a possible problem with your platelets or blood vessels and a repeat bleeding time or other tests (for example platelets count or clotting studies) may be needed to accurately diagnose the cause.
