The Bilirubin Total, Direct & Indirect Test is a blood test used to measure bilirubin levels in your blood, which checks liver function and can find a number of disorders including jaundice or issues that affect red blood cells. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment made when your body breaks down old red blood cells. Abnormal bilirubin levels may mean liver disease, bile duct blockage, or a high amount of red blood cell destruction in your body.
Process
- A blood sample will be collected from a vein in your arm.
- The blood sample will be taken to a laboratory for testing and analysis.
- The test will measure total bilirubin, direct (also referred to as processed) bilirubin, and indirect (unprocessed) bilirubin levels.
When to Get Tested
The test may be ordered based on symptoms including yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, fatigue or lethargy. A pediatrician may also order this test for a newborn with jaundice or if a routine liver function test indicates abnormal results.
