The Direct Bilirubin test determines the amount of conjugated bilirubin present in your blood. Bilirubin, which is yellow, is released during the breakdown of red blood cells. Bilirubin goes through a process in the liver that allows it to dissolve in water so it can be excreted. The results from this test provide physicians with information needed to investigate a patient's liver health and establish a diagnosis about jaundice, hepatitis, or biliary obstruction.
Process
- A phlebotomist will take a small sample of blood from a vein in your arm.
- The blood sample is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
When to Get Tested
The Direct Bilirubin test is warranted if you have developed jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), other liver disease symptoms, or the need for continuity of monitoring for an established liver condition. It is regularly performed on newborns who present with jaundice.

Understanding Your Results
