The Anemia Panel Basic Test is a blood test used to help determine if a patient has anemia by analyzing red blood cells and iron levels. This test is important because it can determine if patients have anemia, specific type of anemia, and the severity of their anemia. The sooner an anemia diagnosis is made, the quicker the physician can provide treatment that will restore patients' energy and health.
Process
- A lab technician will come to draw the blood from the patient's vein.
- The blood is drawn in special test tubes for each test.
- The specimen will be sent to a lab where machines will analyze the components of the patient's blood.
When to get tested
You may want to ask about this test if you are feeling tired, weak, dizzy and/or have pallor. This test is also helpful for pregnant women, older adults, and individuals with chronic illnesses to rule out anemia.
Sample Type
A small specimen of blood (3–5 mL) will be needed.
Test Preparation
Before your test, you may need to undergo fasting overnight (8–12 hours), particularly if iron levels are being tested. In preparation, do not take iron supplements for 24 hours before the testing.
Understanding Your Results
Normal results would show healthy red blood cells and iron levels. If your results are low or abnormal, your doctor may order more tests that can determine the cause and offer treatment options to manage any anemia.
