The Amylase Serum Test tests for the presence of the enzyme called amylase in your blood. Amylase aids in the digestion of carbohydrates and is produced by the pancreas (the organ that helps digest, absorb, and use our food) and salivary glands in your mouth. This test is valuable for assessing problems concerning our pancreas and salivary glands (e.g. pancreatitis).
Process
- Our phlebotomist will take a small sample of blood from your arm.
- The sample is submitted to a lab for testing.
When to get tested
Consider this test if you or an individual has symptoms of severe abdominal pain, nausea, or swelling of the salivary glands. It can be used to also monitor issues for conditions with known pancreas or gland problems.
Sample Type
Simply put, you provide a sample of blood from a vein in your arm only.
Test Preparation
Fasting is not usually required, but do avoid alcohol at least 24 hours prior to the test. Please inform your doctor of any medications you are taking.
Understanding Your Results
A normal level of amylase indicates normal pancreatic function and salivary glands. A markedly elevated amylase level may indicate upper abdominal problems such as acute pancreatitis or gland inflammation. A low amylase can suggest chronic pancreatic problems. Your doctor will consider your amylase results with other tests and your symptoms before recommending the next course of action.
