The Amylase (Fluid) Test is used to assess the level of the enzyme amylase in fluids taken from the body, specifically pleural fluid (fluid around the lungs), peritoneal fluid (fluid in the abdomen) or drain fluid (collected following surgery). Amylase is an enzyme produced in a large part in the pancreas and assists in the digestion of carbohydrates. This test can be very important because high levels of amylase in fluids can mean that there are conditions such as pancreatitis, leakage of pancreas fluid, or injury to the esophagus.
Process
- A sample of fluid is drawn from the chest, abdomen, or surgical drain.
- The fluid sample is sent out to a laboratory to test for levels of amylase.
- The levels are compared to the serum (blood) levels of amylase.
When to get tested
This test is most often done when there is abdominal pain, a build-up of fluid, or some other symptoms following pancreatic surgery. The test will help indicate whether the cause of build-up of the body fluid could be attributed to a problem with the pancreas or whether it is due to something else.

Understanding Your Results
If fluid amylase levels are much higher than blood levels, it may suggest a pancreatic leak, pancreatitis, or gastrointestinal injury. Your doctor will use these results along with imaging and symptoms to decide the next steps.
