The blood ammonia test determines ammonia levels in your bloodstream. Ammonia arises from the body's digestion of proteins as a waste product. When functioning normally, the liver changes ammonia to urea for removal by the kidneys. If the liver is diseased or poorly functioning, ammonia levels may rise in the blood and impair brain function. The blood ammonia test can help with diagnosis of potential liver disease, hepatic encephalopathy or metabolic disorders.
Process
- A sample of blood is taken from a vein in the arm.
- The blood sample is placed in a cold (ice) environment, and taken directly to the laboratory.
- Laboratory tests assess the blood sample for ammonia levels.
When to Get Tested
Testing is indicated if the patient has confusion, notable fatigue, or odd behaviors, which may be exacerbated in the case of liver disease. Testing can also be helpful in the follow up of diagnosed liver or metabolic disorders.
