The ALP test measures the alkaline phosphatase enzyme levels in your blood. This enzyme is found in the liver, bile ducts, and bones. Doctors order this test to help detect liver problems (e.g. hepatitis or bile duct obstruction), bone disorders (e.g. Paget's disease or rickets), or measure the response to treatment. ALP is often part of routine tests for liver function, where problems may be detected early, even before symptoms develop.
Process
- A small sample of blood will be taken from a vein in your arm.
- The specimen is taken to a laboratory for processing.
- Results will be reported in units per liter (U/L), and compared to normal ranges.
When to Get Tested
