The Albumin, Fluid Test measures albumin protein levels in body fluids (like fluid around the lungs or abdomen). This test allows doctors to understand the reason for excess fluids in these locations. The albumin level in the fluid can be compared to the albumin level in blood to show if the cause is related to global health problems (like heart, liver problems), or more localized problems like infections or inflammation to help decide on the right management plan.
Process
- Our phlebotomist gets the fluid with a needle (for example, in thoracentesis you remove thoracic (lung) fluid).
- The lab technician will also obtain a blood sample to measure the presence of albumin.
- Both samples will be taken to the lab where they will analyze the sample to see how much albumin was in both samples.
When to get tested
The test may be recommended by your doctor if you have unexplained fluid in your chest or abdomen or symptoms like swelling or breathlessness.
