The Albumin & IgG, CSF Test evaluates the concentrations of albumin and immunoglobulin G (IgG) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). CSF is the fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord. Knowing how much albumin and IgG is in CSF can help assess the health of the central nervous system. It can help identify the sources of inflammation and infection. It can also help diagnose autoimmune disorders, such as multiple sclerosis. It can determine the integrity of the blood-brain barrier, and whether there is immune activity in the central nervous system.
Process
- A few milliliters of CSF can be obtained through a lumbar puncture (spinal tap).
- A blood sample can also be obtained to evaluate protein levels and compare.
- Serum and CSF samples will be sent to the laboratory for albumin and IgG level measurements.
When to get tested
The most common indications to do this test is if your doctor notes you have neurological symptoms (e.g. weakness, numbness, confusion) or if the doctor suspects that there are infections or autoimmune diseases affecting your brain or spinal cord.
Sample Type
The test has two required samples taken from the patient; (1) cerebrospinal fluid must be collected using a lumbar puncture technique, and (2) blood needs to be collected.
Test Preparation
There is no fasting needed. Do not perform any heavy exercise before the test, and talk to your doctor about any medications or bleeding problems you may have.
Understanding Your Results
If albumin is high in the CSF, the blood-brain barrier may be damaged. If IgG is raised, an immune system reaction in the nervous system may be happening. Your doctor will look at your results, along with other tests, when determining next steps.
