The Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) Maternal Test is a blood test obtained during pregnancy to measure AFP, a protein generated by the developing baby. This test helps screen for a number of birth defects especially neural tube and abdominal wall defects and some chromosomal conditions. The test provides critical information about the baby’s health and follow- up testing if needed.
Process
- Our phlebotomist draws a small blood sample from the mother’s arm.
- The blood sample is sent to a laboratory where the alpha-fetoprotein levels are determined.
- Results are adjusted based upon the week of pregnancy and other factors to ensure precise results.
When to get tested
The test is usually taken between the 15th and 20th week of pregnancy. This test is recommended for all pregnant women, especially for women who are over 35 years of age, or anyone with a family history of birth defects, or with other risk factors.

Understanding Your Results
Normal alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels suggest no increased risk of some birth defects, while abnormal AFP levels raise the risk of potential birth defects which may lead to other diagnostic tests such as ultrasound or amniocentesis.
