The ANC test assesses how many neutrophils (a type of white blood cell) are present in your blood. Neutrophils are essential for fighting infection, particularly bacterial infections. The ANC test helps to determine the strength of your immune system and whether you have a risk of developing an infection. This test is important for those receiving treatment (for example, chemotherapy), and those with frequent infections, or suspected immune system disorders.
Process
- A phlebotomist will take a small sample of blood from a vein (typically from your arm).
- The sample is taken in a tube containing EDTA, which is lavender in color.
- The lab uses machines to determine your ANC by taking the white blood cell counts and neutrophil % and calculating the ANC.
When to Get Tested
You might require this test if you have frequent infections, unexplained fevers, or are getting chemotherapy or radiation therapy. It can be monitored in autoimmune or blood-related diseases.
Test Preparation
No special preparation or fasting is necessary prior to this test. You may continue to eat and take your medications as usual unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

Understanding Your Results
Normal ANC is between 1500-8000 cells/μL. Any value less than this range means you have the risk for infection (neutropenia); values greater than this range mean you have inflammation or infection.
