The Absolute Lymphocyte Count (ALC) test quantifies the number of lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) in a microliter of blood. Lymphocytes are important white blood cells that take part in protecting our body from infections and disease. This test can assess your immune system and can also diagnose infections, immune disorders, or blood cancer. The test is often part of a complete blood count (CBC) test which is a very straightforward test that typically doesn't require any preparation, takes almost no time to perform, and can be done nearly anywhere.
Process
- For the ALC test you will have blood drawn from your arm.
- The blood sample will be taken for testing in our lab, where they will utilize an automated machine to analyze your blood and determine the results.
- The ALC is determined by multiplying the white blood cell count of your sample by the lymphocyte percentage.
When to Get Tested
You may need this test if you have frequent and persistent infections, fever of unknown origin, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue or weakness, if you are receiving cancer treatment, or if you are being prescribed medication that suppresses your immune system.
Test Preparation
You do not need to fast or do anything special; simply tell your physician if you are on any medications and if you have been sick lately.
Sample Type
For the ALC test, a venous blood sample is needed.
Understanding Your Results
Normal ALC is between 1000 and 4800 cells/μL. If your ALC is low, you could potentially have a suppressed immune system, and if your ALC is high you could be experiencing an infection or even a blood disorder. Additional blood tests may be ordered based on your overall health.
