The Absolute Eosinophil Count (AEC) test is a simple blood test that checks for eosinophils (a type of white blood cell), which are a part of your body that responds to allergic reactions, infections, and inflammation. An AEC can assist your healthcare provider in diagnosing or monitoring conditions with eosinophils such as asthma, eczema, parasitic infection, and certain autoimmune diseases.
Process
- A blood sample is drawn from a vein in your arm by our phlebotomist.
- The sample is then examined using a machine or a microscope to determine the number of eosinophils.
- Eosinophils are counted by multiplying the total number of white blood cells times the percentage of eosinophils.
When to Get Tested
You will often get an AEC if you have symptoms that may include allergies, rashes of the skin, breathing problems, or problems digesting. An AEC test may also be performed if routine blood analysis indicates an abnormal eosinophil value, or if you are being treated for known eosinophilic disorder.
Test Preparation
No fasting is needed. Be sure to let your doctor know about all medications, especially if you have taken steroids, as these will affect results.

Understanding Your Results
Generally, a high count indicates allergies including hay fever, possible infectious parasitic infections, (both intestinal and blood parasites or something inflammatory like rheumatoid arthritis); a low count isn't as common, and is typically not significant. Your doctor will interpret the results with your symptoms and any other tests to obtain a diagnosis.
