A Free T4 test measures the level of active thyroid hormone (thyroxine) in one’s blood to aid the doctor in assessing the level of thyroid activity. This test is important for evaluating thyroid disorders such as hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, and to evaluate the patient’s response to treatment.
Process
- A small volume of blood is taken from a vein from one’s arm for a blood sample.
- The procedure is simple, and takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.
- After the blood sample is taken it is submitted to a laboratory, and results are typically available the same day.
When to get tested
This test may be requested if the person is experiencing symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, such as changes in weight, general fatigue, dry skin, thinning hair, or fast or irregular heart rate. This test is commonly requested when the TSH levels are below or above normal or when monitoring treatment with thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
Sample Type
Sample type is blood, and the blood is collected into a gold or mint-top tube.
Test Preparation
Fasting is not required. If you are taking any medications, be sure to mention them to the physician, especially biotin.
Understanding Your Results
Free T4 results can be high, which may mean hyperthyroidism, or low, which may mean either low thyroid hormone production (hypothyroidism) or some type of pituitary issue. This is when your doctor may recommend additional tests or consider modifying your treatment results.
